Her rank doubles as a nod to the fact that her character actually took up the mantle of Captain Marvel in the comics before Carol Danvers did. Following the traditional Marvel title sequence, we see Captain Monica Rambeau arrive at the S.W.O.R.D. Teyonah Parris really shows off her talent as an actor as she fully introduces a dynamic new character into the MCU. The reveal in this sequence is that Geraldine of WandaVision is actually Monica Rambeau and was a victim that has been brought back after 5 years only to realize that her Mother has died in the interim. The cold open to this episode is a chilling look at the impact of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame (essentially the climax of the entire MCU or at least of The Infinity Saga that has culminated through to the end of Phase 3), and the aftermath of bringing those who had vanished in Thanos’ ‘snappening’ back to the present day. “The procedure went well, you said it yourself!” The doctor then explains to Monica that her mother Maria Rambeau died 3 years ago, and that was 2 years after she herself had disappeared.
She challenges this statement, claiming to have only been asleep no longer than 20 minutes. The woman asks the doctor where her mother is, and is told that she’s dead. “Monica?” A doctor asks, looking stunned by what is happening around them. Materializing out of thin air, a familiar figure wakes up at the bedside in a hospital room, with a voice in her head that says “Lieutenant Trouble.” Geraldine (as seen on TV) makes her way through a chaotic hospital unit as others are being snapped back into existence, and she bumps into someone who suddenly appears in front of her.
